Back home, it's no surprise I'm still tryin' to socialize I've been crooked since I was small. I had a wicked-wack laugh that scared them all. I had an oxygen mask for my panic attacks. I was like Woody Woodpecker on crack. No one stuck up for the left out, I was always in a brawl. I turned the other cheek 'cause I got popped in the jaw. Now I'm a hard-boiled poet, got tattoos, been to jail. Lived on Cherokee Street in a roach motel. I got liberated, got left for dead. My big brother thought I lost my head. Instead of making money, I made a lot of bread. I met everybody who thought they had it bad. I stuck up for the left out, I was ready for a brawl. I turned the other cheek 'cause I got popped in the jaw. Well my momma learned me that boys are bad. I'm sorry to all the ladies who got a taste of that. I loved a lot of women, broke a lot of hearts. Had as much ambition as I did false starts. No one came along and set me right Like singing on Sunday with my wife. Ahhhhhhh. People are the temple where I pray And my faith gets tested day by day. Stand up for the left out. Be ready for a brawl Turn the other cheek if there's any chance at all. Turn the other cheek my friends if there's any chance at all.

Gasoline should be illegal, jet- fuel in the police-pound, Then we can get most the missiles back down on the ground. I want a fuel-celled F-16, and a solar-powered Jeep. I want electric cars in every garage, And I want them on the cheap. How do I justify living check to check? Who should I crucify, or who do I elect For public transportation that runs on empty coffee cups? Or perhaps a city bus fueled by passenger chin-ups? I want a fuel-celled F-16, and a solar-powered Jeep. I want electric cars in every garage, And I want them on the cheap.

I would be with you tonight If you were not Kryptonite and I Wasn’t trying to be Superman I’ll just fly circles downtown To find a hall where I can’t be found And where you wouldn’t want to see the band Well Pittsburgh is small and tight You don’t see many Mennonites Mr. Roger’s neighborhood does cocaine. On every corner there’s a Steeler’s game The women here are just as insane for Football, drugs & booze. I would be with you tonight If you were not Kryptonite And I wasn’t trying to be Superman But I’m not Irish or interesting I don’t write to magazines And tell them anything that occurs to me. I work a job 9 to 5 I put on a suit and smile I’m sure I bore a girl with scars like you. It would be fair for you to say The only way I make my pay Is to fight, figure and sue. I would be with you tonight If you were not Kryptonite And I wasn’t trying to be Superman

about

Kansas Dan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I write songs because I have to laugh or embrace a fear. I wish I was a gospel and soul singer. My writing reflects that. When I open my mouth to sing, however, I come out country and folky. Like Cash, I try to give voice to the voiceless in some songs. Like John Prine I like to express my patriotism with a bit of sarcasm. ... more
